A Roof With A View – thanks to ESG and Origin Architectural
When balustrade experts Origin Architectural approached us to provide glass for a balustrade on an extensive first-floor balcony for their private domestic customer in Essex, we were delighted. It gave us the opportunity to take a collaborative approach with one of the UK’s leading glass balustrade and glass hardware experts.
Origin Architectural’s customer had decided on a glass balustrade with no handrail for their prestigious rural home, in order to maximise the rooftop view and minimise any visual obstructions. As the balustrade would measure 1100mm from the bottom of the profile to the top of the glass, opting for no handrail would provide the clearest and least interrupted appreciation of the scenery.
After discussing the project with Origin Architectural, it was decided that, in order to meet Building Regulations, the balustrade should be constructed using 17.5mm toughened laminated glass from our Tufflam™ range. Origin Architectural advised the customer to proceed with the installation of the balustrade channel first, so that highly accurate dimensions could be determined before the glass was ordered from ESG. The channel system supplied was fully tested to 0.74Kn, the required line load test for a domestic balcony at height, and installed on the balcony.
Our technical team then provided drawings for approval by Origin Architectural, Building Control and the customer, who wished for a fairly rapid turnaround. With the plans signed off, Origin Architectural used their software to calculate exact sizes for each of the panels, which were manufactured and meticulously cut to size at our state-of-the-art production facility in Essex. The panels were then transported to site by our dedicated delivery team, and expertly installed.
The customer chose to install additional glass stiffeners at the top of the glass after installation. The partnership between ESG and Origin Architectural resulted in a stunning installation and a very happy customer.
Nick Watson at Origin Architectural told us, “We were delighted to work with ESG using Tufflam laminated glass. The high quality glass and fast turnaround were invaluable on this prestigious project. Our customer couldn’t have been happier with both the speed of delivery and the quality of the glass!”
If you are contemplating a similar project, it’s a good idea to talk to your installer and your glass processor before making a final decision – it is well worth benefitting from their combined experience and expertise.
